BENI MGUILD N° 521 BM
An outstanding monochromatic blue sleeping rug, 1960s–1970s, featuring an attractive variation in different hues of blue in the open field. Light-colored stripes and dotted lines run horizontally across the royal blue ground, occasionally interspersed with a few red knots that add an interesting touch to the overall design. Unlike indigo, which is a natural dye, the royal blue appears to be of mineral origin, based on color testing conducted by Moroccan rug researchers in the 1990s. This more intense blue seems to have become available in Morocco in the late 1940s. Very few carpets from around that period include both dyes: indigo and royal blue. This carpet contains no indigo fibers; it is made entirely of mineral-based royal blue. However, some of the gray overdyed wool in this piece appears slightly petrol blue, which contributes to the tonal depth and vibrancy of the entire blue field.

The tribal area of the BENI MGUILD is located in the central portion of the Middle Atlas with Azrou as the largest town in the territory. The Beni Mguild tribe is split up into nine sub-tribes divided into three zones: the Azaghar Plateau region, the ridges of the Middle Atlas proper, and the steppes of the upper Moulouya valley. The knotted rugs of the Beni Mguild have a high pile height (up to 4 cm/ 1.57 in) with a dense structure if used as sleeping rugs. The ones used as floor coverings for festive occasions are lower in pile and even denser in structure. The colors are usually brownish purple or burgundy red, white ones are highly unusual, and in rarer cases also blue or green. The rugs of the Beni Mtir, Ait Seghrouchène (with a dark background), Zayan, Guigou and Ait Sgougou are most often confused with the ones of the Beni Mguild.
