BENI MGUILD N° 519BM

An enigmatic, older Beni Mguild rug, mid 20th century, featuring a classic V-pattern that is clearly visible on the backside and displays refined nuance on the pile side. This rug is characterized by the use of indigo-dyed fibers, superb local wool, a striking variation of color in the purple background, and a tight, sturdy construction. When laid on the ground and viewed from different angles, it reveals an enigmatic play of colored dots that seem painterly applied onto its mysteriously dark background. The use of indigo blue wool in larger amounts usually indicates a date of manufacture around the 1950s (and earlier), when Jewish indigo dyers discontinued their work. These craftsmen emigrated to Israel after its founding in 1948, bringing an end to their skilled practice in Morocco. This Beni Mguild carpet was likely reserved for festive occasions and communal gatherings, which explains its excellent condition. It is deeply steeped in a rich tradition that has been passed down through generations.

The tribal area of the BENI MGUILD is located in the central portion of the Middle Atlas with Azrou as the largest town in the territory. The Beni Mguild tribe is split up into nine sub-tribes divided into three zones: the Azaghar Plateau region, the ridges of the Middle Atlas proper, and the steppes of the upper Moulouya valley. The knotted rugs of the Beni Mguild have a high pile height (up to 4 cm/ 1.57 in) with a dense structure if used as sleeping rugs. The ones used as floor coverings for festive occasions are lower in pile and even denser in structure. The colors are usually brownish purple or burgundy red, white ones are highly unusual, and in rarer cases also blue or green. The rugs of the Beni Mtir, Ait Seghrouchène (with a dark background), Zayan, Guigou and Ait Sgougou are most often confused with the ones of the Beni Mguild.
