PILE RUG N° 574PR
This unique rug, circa 1990s, remains somewhat of a mystery in terms of its exact origin. It was purchased in Beni Mellal but is said by the seller to come from a mountainous region, and it does not display typical Beni Mellal characteristics. The composition begins with a distorted Marmoucha- or Ait Youssi–like lozenge network, which gradually dissolves into an open field of freely floating concentric lozenges, combined with small motifs such as an eight-pointed star, a cross, and others. It then transitions into a free-flowing stepped diamond pattern. Particularly notable is the variation within the border motifs. The rug is knotted using a combination of Berber, but predominantly single knots, giving the surface a less dense yet more elegant feel. Its wool stems from the Middle Atlas and is of good quality. The pattern language of this piece shows overall influences from the southeastern Middle Atlas, yet it remains a unique, standalone example.
