BENI OUARAIN N° BO-MS2

An impressive Beni Ouarain, mid 20th century, which brings a striking presence to any space, partly due to the magic of the old local wool and partly because of the varied geometric pattern in its impressive large scale format. The carpet comes from a Swiss collection and was originally purchased at Wohnbedarf AG in Switzerland. Its reverse side features an original green export label (used until the late 1980s), with a lead seal. This seal is the oldest form of the official approval (called l’estampillage in French) from the Ministry of Crafts, which was originally established by the French in Morocco in the 1930s. This genuine carpet, rare to find in Morocco these days, with the typical lustrous wool of the Beni Ouarain sheep, is a remarkable example of traditional Beni Ouarain weaving mastery.

In the early 1930s, the art historian Sigfried Giedion, the architect Werner Max Moser, and the businessman Rudolf Graber set out to offer a new type of furniture that was in tune with the social upheaval of the time. From the very beginning, Wohnbedarf AG was closely associated with the development of new furniture and collaborated with many renowned architects. Moroccan carpets were added to the furniture collection, marking their debut in the European market.
