AIT BOU ICHAOUEN N° 568ABI

A pile rug from the Ait Bou Ichaouen, 1980s, or possibly from a smaller tribe based in the rural community of Talsint. Some elements of the design are reminiscent of Jebel Amour rugs from Algeria, recognizable by the type of the black motifs and the typical red ground. The green, freely scattered motifs, which almost form a complementary contrast to the red, are used to great effect and contribute to the vibrancy of the composition. However, the overall design is probably a free interpretation by the weaver, who is simply playing with the pattern repertoire of the Jebel Amour. Weavers of this region are known to frequently adopt Algerian patterns, but the second source is mainly, but not exclusively, of her own invention.
